Title:
Robert's Plants
Description:
Ascension Spurge (E. origanoides), an endangered species of plant found only on the Ascension Island, predominantly on the property used by the 45th Operations Group, Detachment 2, Ascension Auxiliary Airfield (AAF), in the South Atlantic Ocean. These green leafed red stemmed plants are growing wild near a roadway hairpin turn, halfway up a hill. In the background is a weather station that records environmental conditions for the nearby spurge. Ongoing studies by the Computer Sciences Raytheon contract environmental engineering associates have taught them that this endemic plant survives best in these remote locations. Understanding the weather can help choose better locations and conditions to replant and promote growth of this small plant. Evasive plant such as the one in the background competing for space that the spurge needs to establish itself in and send roots deep into the rocky soil. Although, all U.S. Air Force bases have environmental programs, this small remote island environment allows easy observation of the efforts supporting the endangered spurge plant and self-sufficient water, power and waste programs.
