This 1967 photograph depicts Smallpox Eradication Program, microbiologist/virologist, Nathaniel Rothstein seated at left, while he was observing a laboratory technician, as she was testing newly-processed smallpox vaccine vials, which contained freshly-processed freeze-dried, or lyophilized, vaccine. This lab was located in a suburb of Lagos, Nigeria known as Yaba, during that country's smallpox immunization campaign of the 1960s and 1970s.
