This historical image was provided by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Depicted, was a page from a written medical questionnaire, recorded during a history and physical examination of a fur cutter, who'd been exposed to mercury in a hat manufacturing plant. Fur processing involves the use of mercury in the form of mercury nitrate, which renders the fur suitable for manufacturing hats. If precautions were not taken, such as wearing a filtered breathing mask, or gloves, mercury exposure was quite likely, and would have lead to heavy metal poisoning, with severe pathologic neurological consequences. The image was published in the 'Public Health Bulletin', No. 263, Fig. 24, 1941.
