George Miller, the Air Force Services Agency food and beverage operations chief, is presented the 2011 International Foodservice Manufacturers Association's Gold Plate Award May 23, 2011, by Michael Hickey (left), the ECOLAB Corp. executive vice president, and Larry Oberkell, the IMFA president and CEO. Mr. Miller is the first DOD member to win the award that annually recognizes the best foodservice operator worldwide. The award was presented during the National Restaurant Association and Air Force Hennessy Awards held in Chicago May 20 through 24.

World War II had been over for two years and the Korean War lay three years ahead when the Air Force ended a 40-year association with the U.S. Army to become a separate service. The Department of the Air Force was created when President Harry S Truman signed the National Security Act of 1947.
