Description:
The National Immunization Days (NID) were effective at immunizing thousands of children throughout India. Here we see that older siblings were often responsible for bringing their younger brothers and sisters with them, so that they too could receive the polio vaccine. This image showed a small child, being held by another child, as he received his polio vaccine from a public health care practitioner. After having received his vaccine, the child would also have his finger marked by an ink marker, and in this way, documented as having actually received the immunization, as well as also preventing the child from receiving additional doses during the immunization campaign. The image was provided by Chris Zahniser, B.S.N., R.N., M.P.H., a STOP Transmission of Polio (STOP) immunization initiative team member and photographer. Ms. Zahniser was at the time assigned to the state of Uttar Pradesh in northern India, and spent three months working in the Districts of Gorakhpur and Deoria.
