Description:
These were members of the local Indian team that worked closely with the CDC Stop Transmission of Polio (STOP) team participants to implement the country's polio eradication program. With pen in hand, Ms. Vertika Arya, an administrative assistant from the Gorakhpur office, was shown here conducting an interview with a Burka-clad Muslim mother and her child, while in the foreground, facing the camera, was Mr. Parag Sharma. Such interviews educated the unfamiliar with the details associated with polio, and the protocols associated with the vaccination process. The image was provided by Chris Zahniser, B.S.N., R.N., M.P.H., a STOP team member and photographer, who was assigned to the state of Uttar Pradesh in northern India, and spent three months working in the Districts of Gorakhpur and Deoria.
