This photograph, provided by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), depicted a Public Health Service (PHS) officer (Rt) observing the working process being conducted by two female military TNT (trinitrotoluene) ordnance factory employees stationed at an ore machine. A poisonous chemical, TNT will irritate the skin upon contact, and actually will change the skin's color to a bright yellow-orange. Prolonged exposure leads to liver damage, anemia, enlargement of the spleen, and a compromised immune system, to name a few of its negative effects. Trinitrotoluene is also a known carcinogen. Neither woman, nor the officer were wearing any protective filtered breathing masks, but were wearing gloves. The officer was wearing what appeared to be protective eyewear.
