Description:
This photograph, provided by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), depicted a male Public Health Service (PHS) officer as he was examining the hands of one of three female 'shell pourers', inside a military TNT (trinitrotoluene) ordnance factory. A poisonous chemical, TNT will irritate the skin upon contact, and actually will change the skin's color to a bright yellow-orange. Prolonged exposure leads to liver damage, anemia, enlargement of the spleen, and a compromised immune system, to name a few of its negative effects. Trinitrotoluene is also a known carcinogen. None of the women, or the officer, were wearing any protective filtered breathing masks. The women were wearing gloves.
