Description:
Provided by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), this historic 1943 image depicted an inhouse nurse examining the hands of a military TNT (trinitrotoluene) ordnance plant employee for signs of TNT contamination. A poisonous chemical, TNT will irritate the skin upon contact, and actually will change the skin's color to a bright yellow-orange. Prolonged exposure leads to liver damage, anemia, enlargement of the spleen, and a compromised immune system, to name a few of its negative effects. Trinitrotoluene is also a known carcinogen. Note that this man was not wearing a filtered breathing mask, or gloves, which would have protected him from accidentally airborne particulates, or spills.
