Description:
This historic image was provided by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The photograph depicted a tunnel worker who was standing inside an aqueduct under construction, on a wooden platform atop the water's surface, contained in the man-made structure. At this location, the tunnel was in three stages of completion. Arranged in an arch at the rooftop, was a meshwork of steel support beams hugging the vaulted ceiling; the raw rock having been exposed upon excavation, lined the foreground walls; in the background, the tunnel's interior was lined with concrete forming its smooth luminal surface. It's difficult to tell from this image what protective gear the worker was wearing, but it can be determined that he was wearing thigh-high boots, and what appears to be headgear, which hopefully was a helmet. This image was published in the January, 1948 edition of the 'Industrial Bulletin, N.Y.', p. 17.
