Description:

This historic image, published in the November, 1947 issue of 'Industrial Hygiene Newsletter', was provided by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), and depicted a 1000 kV X-ray machine that was being positioned adjacent to a metal boiler, in order to perform a radiographic analysis of a boiler weld. A radiographic plate would be positioned behind the boiler, which would be exposed when the x-rays passed through the boiler's metal construct, thereby, highlighting the 'health' of the metallic weld site. Even today, radiographic analyses are still performed in order to reveal the presence of stress fractures in dense materials such as metals and concrete.
