Description:

Jimmie Sanders (in white) torques one of the many flange bolts that hold the 5,100-pound Mach 6 throat of a 50-inch closed-circuit hypersonic wind tunnel at the Von Karman Gas Dynamics Facility, Arnold Air Force Base, Tenn. Scott Pogue (behind on second floor) maneuvers a bridge crane hoist over the Mach 8 throat assembly in its second-story storage rack. Air comes up through a pipe at the end of the silver section and can then be heated as it moves into the venturi and on to the test section just beyond and left of blue section seen. Workbenches below the tunnel allow mounted scale models and their mounts to be mechanically lowered out of the tunnel and be worked on while the air continues to flow. The facility operates three continuous-flow wind tunnels that are powered by a nine-stage compressor system that is an eighth of a mile long and is driven by six electric motors providing a grand total of 92,000 horsepower.
