Description:
This historical photograph, provided by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), depicted the inside of the 'U.S. Smelting, Refining, & Mining Co.' mine shaft in Utah. This mine shaft was located inside the Lark Section, at the bottom of the Yosemite No. 2 Incline B., on the exhaust side. Situated in this image towards the left, was a 125 HP Jeffrey Aerodyne exhaust fan, which had a 14,000 cfm flow-through capacity. In the close confines of a subterranean mine such as this one, it's critically important that proper air quality be maintained. Note that the miner was wearing a protective hard hat, goggles, and gloves, but no filtered breathing mask was worn; however, the quality of this air cannot be determined from this image. Also note the 'High Voltage' warning sign posted on the door towards the far right.
