Published in the 'Public Health Bulletin', No. 262, 1941, this historic image, which was provided by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) depicted a battery factory in which workers were in the process of assembling storage batteries. As a device containing both lead, a toxic heavy metal, and acid, in the form of sulfuric acid, batteries are potentially dangerous, both in their finished state, as well as during their manufacture. Precautions need be taken when building a battery, including the use of goggles, gloves, and filtered breathing devices. These accessories were being implemented by these workers. In gaining a better understanding of workplace hazards, through hands-on and on-site information acquisition, protocol-formulating bodies such as NIOSH, are better able to create a safer workplace through substantiation of appropriate safety regulations.
