Description:
Published in the 'Public Health Bulletin', No. 262, 1941, this historic image, which was provided by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) depicted a battery factory assembly line worker in the process of inserting separators in storage batteries. As a device containing both lead, a toxic heavy metal, and acid, in the form of sulfuric acid, batteries are potentially dangerous, both in their finished state, as well as during their manufacture. Precautions need be taken when building a battery, including the use of goggles, gloves, and filtered breathing devices. None of these accessories were being implemented by these workers.
