Description:
This historical photograph, provided by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), depicted the inside of the 'U.S. Smelting, Refining, & Mining Co.' mine shaft in Utah. This mine shaft was at the 3200 foot subterranean level, in the U.S. Section (Exhaust Side), where towards the right, a 30 HP Joy Axivane exhaust fan was located. Note that the fan's rear mechnics were exposed, through which, exhaust fumes would have been expelled. This fan had a 14,000 cfm flow-through capacity. In the close confines of a subterranean mine such as this one, it's critically important that proper air quality be maintained. Note that the miner was wearing a protective hard hat, but no filtered breathing mask; however, the quality of this air cannot be determined from this image.
