Description:
On the grounds of the Carville, Louisiana Leprosarium there were many wonderful flower gardens, hosting plants of all kinds. Some of the patients had magical green thumbs, to which these magnificent azaleas surely attest. Being that the patients were for the most part quarantined, and therefore, sequestered from the surrounding society, participation in outdoor activities such gardening were much appreciated. The National Hansen's Disease Museum's (NHDM) mission is to collect, preserve and interpret the medical and cultural artifacts of the Carville Historic District. In addition, we want to promote the understanding, identification, and treatment of Hansen's Disease (leprosy). We fulfill this mission by creating and maintaining museum displays, traveling exhibits, publications and a website in order to educate and inform the public on all levels.
