In this 2000 image, provided by Chris Zahniser, B.S.N., R.N., M.P.H., a Stop Transmission of Polio (STOP) immunization initiative team member and photographer, depicted an Indian mother and her child who'd been suspected of having a case of acute flaccid paralysis (AFP), brought on by having contracted poliomyelitis. During the time that this picture had been captured, health care practitioners were in the process of conducting a follow-up visit, in order to determine if there was indeed, a loss of muscle tone. Ms. Zahniser was at the time assigned to the state of Uttar Pradesh in northern India, and spent three months working in the Districts of Gorakhpur and Deoria.
