Description:
This photograph was captured in 2000, and what makes it so intriguing, is that the Bangladesh woman holding her child is Rahima Banu, who 25 years previously, at the age of 2 years, was recorded as the last known, naturally-occurring case of smallpox, i.e., variola major, in the world. In this image, Ms. Banu is standing with her other three children, one of whom is being held by a man, who presumably was her husband. Her own children were being raised in a time where the fear of smallpox was no longer present, which to date, is one of the world's most important public health success stories.
