Description:
Under a relatively low magnification of only 75X, which is 7.5X greater than PHIL 10097, this scanning electron micrograph (SEM) depicted the distal end of this unidentified hornet's left antenna (background). Found in the suburbs of Decatur, Georgia, this antenna was one of a pair, which along with other sensorial structures such as the hair-like 'setae', seen here coating the antenna's surface, and the surface of the leg (foreground), provided the insect with data indicative of changes encountered in its environment such as chemical, thermal, and tactile queues. The antenna is composed of three main regions: scape, pedicle, and flagellum. The scape, which is not visible in this view, attaches the sensory organ to the head region, and the pedicle joins the distal, jointed, multisegmented flagellum to the scape.
