Description:
This 2004 photograph depicted the entrance to a Nigerian Guinea worm containment center. The sign at the entrance displayed a drawing of a Guinea worm sufferer. The worm, Dracunculus medinensis, is shown emerging from the patient's lower leg, and if you look closely, the site of emergence is swollen due to the accompanying infection that usually ensues. These treatment centers not only care for a Guinea worm patients, but educates the sufferers as to how one goes about avoiding the infection in the first place. It's as simple as filtering ones drinking water, thereby, removing the indigenous copepods, which act as the hosts for the D. medinensis larvae, and which act to introduce the parasites into one who drinks the water.
