Description:
This historical image was provided by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The photograph depicted a hatters' industry factory worker who was emptying a bag of processed animal fur into a bin. Though it cannot be determined from this image, as to what may have been the next step in the hat manufacturing process, the man was wearing a filtered breathing mask. However, he was not wearing protective goggles, or gloves. Working with 'carroted' fur, fixed with mercury nitrate, workers could be exposed to airborne mercury, especially when using steam, thereby, suffering the detrimental neurologic consequences from its inhalation. The image was published in the 'Public Health Bulletin', No. 263, 1941, in an article entitled, 'Mercurialism and its Control in the Felt-Hat Industry".
