Description:
Provided by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), this historic image, shot inside a Connecticut hat manufacturing plant, depicted a fur hat factory worker shaping fur into a hat. This worker was not wearing a filtered breathing mask, which in the confines of a factory that used mercury in its fur processing, would now be required. Working with 'carroted' fur, fixed with mercury nitrate, workers could be exposed to airborne mercury, especially when using steam, thereby, suffering the detrimental neurologic consequences from its inhalation. Using steam facilitated the airborne dissemination of this neurotoxic element.
