Description:
Provided by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), this historic image, shot inside a Connecticut hat manufacturing plant, depicted a number of fur hat factory workers shaping felt into various hat shapes. None of the workers appeared to be wearing a filtered breathing mask, which in the confines of a factory that used mercury nitrate, would now be required. Working with 'carroted' fur, fixed with mercury nitrate, workers could be exposed to airborne mercury, especially when using steam, thereby, suffering the detrimental neurologic consequences from its inhalation. Using steam facilitated the airborne dissemination of this neurotoxic element.
