Description:
This historical image was provided by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The photograph showed rows of newly-formed hats, which were in the process of drying on racks, prior to being formed into their final shape. The image was published in the 'Public Health Bulletin', No. 263, 1941, in an article entitled, 'Mercurialism and its Control in the Felt-Hat Industry". Working with newly processed fur, which had been 'carroted', or fixed with mercury nitrate, workers could be exposed to airborne mercury, thereby, suffering the detrimental neurologic consequences from its inhalation. Using steam, which was integral to the hatters' industry, the airborne dissemination of this neurotoxic element was facilitated.
