Description:
Provided by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), this historic image, shot inside a Connecticut hat manufacturing plant, depicted one of the machines used in the fur hatters' industry, which was being cleaned by a factory worker who was using compressed air to blow out debris from the machine components. Something which is very important was the fact that the man was wearing a protective breathing mask, which prevented his from inhaling contaminats made airborne by his task, as well as particulates made airborne during the hat manufacturing process. Being that the manufacturing process involves the use of mercury nitrite, if precautions were not taken, such as wearing a filtered breathing mask, or gloves, mercury exposure was quite likely, leading to heavy metal poisoning, with severe pathologic neurological consequences.
