Description:
This November, 1943 photograph was provided by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Inside a laboratory setting, this image depicted a doctor who was in the process of extracting various dissolved constituents from solutions under analysis, using organic solvents to accomplish this task. It is not know which solvents were being used, or what was to be extracted, but many solvents are toxic, and are known carcinogens. However, you'll note that this man was wearing no protective garments such as a filtered breathing mask, goggles, or gloves, which would have protected him from airborne or spilt contaminants.
