This image was created during a investigation into an outbreak of monkeypox, which took place in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), 1996 to 1997, formerly Zaire. This image depicted a catholic mission within the Katako-Kombe Health Zone, inside the DRC, which was later visited by a group of retreating Zairian military troops, also referred to as the FAZ. In February 1997, 88 cases of febrile pustular rash had been identified over the previous 12 months in 12 villages within this Katako-Kombe Health Zone, DRC.
