This image was created during an investigation into an outbreak of monkeypox, which took place in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), 1996 to 1997, formerly Zaire. In this particular view, R. Joel Williams, D.V.M, and American zoologist, Delphi Messinger were examining what appeared to be a primate, which was one of the suspected sources of this zoonotic infection.
