The young girl depicted in this 2000 image was shown putting on, or taking off her sneakers, while she was seated on the carpeted floor of a walk-in closet. The closet was designed to facilitate usage by people who had trouble reaching, were seated in a mobility device, or were of short stature. Demonstrated here was one of the benefits enjoyed by children, and showed how widespread are the concepts of universal design.The Center for Universal Design (CUD) is a national research, information, and technical assistance center that evaluates, develops, and promotes accessible and universal design in housing, buildings, outdoor and urban environments and related products. The Center's work manifests the belief that all new environments and products, to the greatest extent possible, should be usable by everyone regardless of their age, ability, or circumstance.
