Description:
This November, 1943 photograph was provided by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The image depicted an industrial chemist in the process of analyzing a solution in order to determine its lead and zinc content using the chelating agent, dithizone (diphenyl-thiocarbazone). Though it cannot be determined from this image, as to the toxicity of any liberated fumes, this scientist was using no protective breathing accessories, goggles, or gloves, even though, as can be seen in PHIL 9753, he was pipetting liquids using his mouth, while simultaneously handling the glass beaker stoppers with his bare hands.
