Description:
Published in the 'Public Health Bulletin', No. 262, 1941, this historic image, which was provided by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), depicted a battery factory in which a worker was in the process of performing a 'plate pasting' operation during the assembly of a lead-acid storage battery. Lead dioxide (PbO2) paste is spread upon what will become the battery's cathode. At the completion of this step, the partially-assembled battery will be placed into a drying oven. Note the inclusion of an exhaust system situated in close proximity to the action at hand. Lead-acid batteries are potentially dangerous, both in their finished state, as well as during their manufacture. Precautions need be taken when building a battery, including the use of goggles, gloves, and filtered breathing devices. This worker was wearing a protective breathing mask and gloves.
