This 2000 image of the Taj Mahal monument in Agra, India, was taken during a 'Stop Transmission of Polio' (STOP) assignment between January and April, 2000. This extravagant monument was built by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his second wife, Mumtaz Mahal. She died in 1631 following childbirth, and left her husband heartbroken. Construction on the monument was begun in 1631, but wasn't completed until 1653. Over 20,000 people in India and Central Asia worked on the building.At the time of this field assignment, team member/photographer Chris Zahniser, R.N., was assigned to the state of Uttar Pradesh in northern India, and spent three months working in the districts of Gorakhpur and Deoria.
