Description:
This 1975 photograph depicted a number of smallpox eradication team members huddled around a village 'infection map', which reflected the geographic layout of the numbered homes, the homes that had already been visited, and where cases had been located. This map was used in conjunction with lists that were compiled describing all of the village inhabitants, who was ill with the disease, and all those living in and around each home. Using these lists, and the map, team members could track, and follow up with vaccinees, and those that were ill, which was integral to the success of the eradication efforts. Once located, those individuals who had left the immediate area were examined, and findings were communicated back to the team leads by way of smallpox radio notifications.
