Description:
This historic image depicted a beautiful garden on the grounds of the Carville, Louisiana Leprosarium. A number of patients were wonderful gardeners, and under their expert care, these South American Poinsettias could be found in their full-fledge bloom during the Christmas season. Churches took advantage of these seasonal plants, decorating their halls with their beauty. The hospital was a self-contained compound with its own storehouse, laundry, food-processing facilities, patient treatment centers, and recreational facilities, as well as numerous gardens such as this the one pictured here. Outdoor activities helped to improve the dispositions of the patients who'd been quarantined, and stigmatized due to their curable affliction.
