Description:
The Carville, Louisiana, Leprosarium patients depicted in this historic image were photographed while picnicking on the Lake Johansen levee, where many such patient gatherings had taken place. Lake Johansen was named after one of the Leprosarium's Chief Medical Officers, Dr. Frederick A. Johansen. The hospital was a self-contained compound with its own storehouse, laundry, food-processing facilities, patient treatment centers, and recreational facilities such as this picnic area. Outdoor activities helped to improve the dispositions of the patients who'd been quarantined, and stigmatized due to their curable affliction.
