Description:
This 2000 photograph depicted a nurse as she was preparing to open a vial of polio vaccine that would be used in a clinical setting, during an Indian National Immunization Day (NID). This was one of a number of images provided by Chris Zahniser, B.S.N., R.N., M.P.H., a STOP Transmission of Polio (STOP) immunization initiative team member and photographer, who was assigned to the state of Uttar Pradesh in northern India, and spent three months working in the Districts of Gorakhpur and Deoria. Following each NID, health workers visited each home in a given District, in order to verify that all children under 5 years of age had received the polio vaccine. Written outside the door of this house would have been the dates indicating when the home had been visited, and that the children had been properly immunized.
