Title:
Ruddy Duck (Oxyura jamaicensis)
Description:
The Ruddy Duck, one of this year's eligible species, appeared on the Federal Duck Stamp in 1981 (inset, top right). Will a Ruddy Duck also grace the 2013-2014 stamp? Watch the 2012 Federal Duck Stamp Contest as the next image is chosen. Ruddy Duck (Oxyura jamaicensis): They are a perky, bad tempered, stiff-tailed little duck that is such an oddball that it does not have much in common with other ducks. The males have a bright blue bill during breeding season and can fill an air sac in the neck like a toy balloon. The hen lays the largest eggs of all ducks in proportion to their body size and usually raises 2 broods in a single season. During courtship the males act more like a tom turkey by puffing up its chest and snapping his fantail so far forward it nearly touches his head all to impress a hen. They nest along the reeds and rushes of the northern prairies. Ruddy ducks prefer to winter along the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of the southern states. Photo credit: USFWS
