Description:
Jamie B. Bettaso, a R3 Wildlife Biologist in Ecological Services, entered the regular Army in 1987 for a three-year enlistment. He was a Combat Medic (91A) attached to the 307th Medical Battalion, 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, N.C. He was deployed for Operation Golden Pheasant in March 1988 to Honduras (photo is of then), where he provided medical support to indigenous. He also deployed to Guyana in March 1989 with the 128th Combat Support Hospital for humanitarian medical aid to locals of Lathem, Guyana. He was recalled to service for Operation Desert Shield/Storm in 1991 for a stateside assignment. He joined the California National Guard in January 1992 as a Combat Medic with the 579th Engineer Battalion and served until March of 2001. With the Cal Guard, he deployed to Bangladesh in January 1993 and Honduras in April 1995 to build hurricane/cyclone shelters with the engineers. He changed his military skills from Combat Medic to Combat Engineer and rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant (E-6) by the time of his military departure in March 2001 with 14 good years of peace time service.
