Title:
People Build “Save-80” Stoves
Description:
People build “Save-80” stoves in Mile Camp in eastern Chad on May 8, 2008. In fiscal year 2010, two principal factors drove PRM’s development of a humanitarian strategy for Chad and the region. The first was security. Despite the presence of UN peacekeepers in Chad, both civilians and humanitarian workers have been subjected to an increasing level of banditry: robbery, carjackings, and at times even kidnapping and murder. Now the Chadian government has asked the UN mission to leave the country, an event that would further expose humanitarians and refugees to danger. The second factor was eastern Chad’s qualification as a protracted refugee situation, meaning it has been in existence for over five years. Even with some hopeful political steps towards peace in Darfur in early 2010, the refugees will likely remain in Chad for several more years. With lifesaving services well-established in the camps, therefore, PRM has shifted its focus to programs that provide a longer-term benefit, such as education and vocational training.
