Title:
The Aerovox Mill, Upper New Bedford Harbor
Description:
This mill was one of two locations where the man-made PCB chemicals were used during the manufacturing of electrical components from approximately the 1940's through the 1970's. While PCBs were not manufactured in these buildings, significant amounts were used and improperly disposed of during the production of electrical parts such as capacitors. Capicitors are used to hold or store electrical charge, and PCBs were a very stable, non flammable chemical to help the capacitors to do their job. Unfortunately, their chemical stability is the same reason why they are so persistent in the environment and have the ability to migrate through the food chain. The manufacturing of PCBs was banned within the United States in the late 1970's.
