Description:
CLOSE-UP AERIAL OF THE GREAT PLAINS PROJECT, SHOWING AMMONIA(FOREGROUND) AND WATER (MID-FOREGROUND LEFT) STORAGE TANKS. THE GREAT PLAINS COAL GASIFICATION PLANT WILL PRODUCE AN AVERAGE OF 125 MILLION CUBIC FEET PER DAY OF SYNTHETIC HIGH-BTU GAS. THIS GAS, A DIRECT SUBSTITUTE FOR NATURAL GAS, IS TO BE MARKETED THROUGH AN INTERSTATE NETWORK OF GAS PIPELINES. APPROXIMATELY 14,000 TONS OF LIGNITE WILL BE FED EACH DAY INTO 12 LURGI GASIFIERS (2 ADDITIONAL GASIFIERS WILL BE KEPT ON STANDBY). GAS EXITING THE GASIFIERS WILL BE COOLED, CLEANED OF SULFUR, AMMONIA, AND OTHER IMPURITIES, THEN UPGRADED TO A PIPELINE QUALITY SYNTHETIC NATURAL GAS. THE LURGI PROCESS WILL USE THE LARGER-SIZED COAL FROM THE PLANT'S COAL CRUSHING OPERATION WHILE SOME 8,000 TONS PER DAY OF THE SMALLER SIZE COAL WILL BE SOLD TO AN ADJACENT STEAM ELECTRIC GENERATING PLANT. THE GREAT PLAINS PLANT WILL ALSO PRODUCE 93 TONS PER DAY OF AMMONIA AND 85 TONS PER DAY OF SULPHUR. For more information or additional images, please contact 202-586-5251.
