Title:
September 2012, Excavation continues in Silver Lake, Pittsfield, MA
Description:
Silver Lake has a history of extensive contamination from historic discharges of PCBs and other chemicals in process water and wastewater from GE's operations. PCBs have been detected in moderate to high amounts in the lake's sediment, bank soils and surface water. Earlier this month, work crews discovered an inactive, abandoned outfall pipe during work in the northeastern area of the lake. That week alone, about 822 cubic yards of contaminated material including coal ash and misc fill was removed. Sediment removed from below the water table was stained black, coated with oil, and gave off a localized hydrocarbon odor. Air monitoring is taking place as well as dust and airborne PCB monitoring.
