THE ROBOT MADE BY CRS INC. AS IT ISOLATES DNA SAMPLES FROM CELLULAR DEBRIS FOR PURIFICATION AND SEQUENCING. THE JOINT GENOME INSTITUE, LOCATED NEAR LLNL, A COLLABORATION OF LLNL, LBNL AND LANL, IS AN OUTGROWTH OF THE EARLIER WORK DONE IN HUMAN GENETICS BY DOE'S NATIONAL LABS AND THEIR INVOLVEMENT IN THE WORLDWIDE HUMAN GENOME PROJECT. THE AIM IS TO DECODE THE ENTIRE SEQUENCE OF A REFERENCE 3 BILLION DNA BASES (THE AMOUNT THAT IS A SINGLE CELL'S NUCLEUS), CALLED THE GENOME, AND TO APPLY THIS KNOWLEDGE TO IMPROVE MEDICINE, HEALTH CARE, AND OTHER AREAS OF BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE.
