Title:
Studies of Ancient Glasses Have Potential to Inform DOE’s Nuclear Waste Disposition Alternatives
Description:
Scientists at the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) are studying pieces of ancient glass that were recently retrieved from two 1,800-year-old shipwrecks and ruins to assist in research efforts for safely storing nuclear waste. One way to store HLW safely is to turn it into durable glass through a process called vitrification. Glass dissolves slowly and it is difficult to understand changes that happen over thousands or even a million years. Unlocking the mechanisms of glass corrosion behavior has significant implications on DOE’s current vitrification methods and storage of nuclear waste.
